Considering New Kitchen Cabinets? Make These Choices For Cleaning Ease

Home & Garden Blog

If you're meticulous about cleaning your home, you might always be looking for ways to make the job easier. The kitchen is an area that can require significant time to clean, but if you're planning a renovation, you should think about changes that will make cleaning day easier. Kitchen cabinets can get coated with grime over time, both from dirty hands touching them and from airborne grease that occurs while you cook. If you want to be able to clean your kitchen cabinets in just a short amount of time, here are some choices to make when selecting your new cabinets.

Flat Fronts

Cabinet doors with elaborate designs may look nice, but they'll also take more time to clean thoroughly. The more grooves and angles there are in a cabinet door, the more places there are for dust and grease to settle. This means that you'll need to pass a cleaning rag along each of these angles and edges, which unnecessarily increases your time spent cleaning.

You can address this issue by choosing cabinets with flat fronts installed. While they might seem plain, cabinets with the right finish can really augment the look of the space. Best of all, a flat-front cabinet just needs a quick wipe with a damp cloth to clean.

Simple Hardware

In a similar manner, simple hardware is easier to clean than ornate hardware. While you might like cabinet handles that are visually intriguing, these can take a lot of time to clean. Remember, the cabinet handles are what peoples' hands touch, so they can get dirty quickly. If you opt for a simple circular handle, it will be easier to clean with an abrasive cloth and some cleaning solution than one with multiple sides and angles. Over the course of cleaning perhaps 15 to 20 handles throughout your kitchen, a simple design can save considerable time on each cleaning day.

Smooth Material

There are lots of choices for cabinet doors, from rustic wood doors to smooth melamine doors. Different styles have different visual qualities, but any type that is smooth will be easier to clean. Natural wood, especially if it has a rustic finish, possesses grooves that can fill with dust and grease. This may especially be a concern if you do lots of frying in your kitchen. Over time, you may need to use an abrasive cleaner to remove grime from these grooves. Conversely, a smooth cabinet door won't pick up grease in the same manner, making it quick and easy to wipe clean. For more information, talk to companies like Cabinet & Granite Depot.
