In summer, a small fire can be used for roasting marshmallows and making smores or for grilling dinner when it's too hot to cook outside. During the winter, a larger fire in the same space could allow for outdoor gatherings even when it would otherwise be too cold outside.
Don't forget storage: Whether you just want to hide extra seating when not in use or you use it on a regular basis for storing a variety of tools, don't forget that additional storage may be necessary for your new space. Before even thinking about installing residential awnings or anything else, take a few moments to figure out exactly what you'll be needing to store and when. If you like to host garden parties, for instance, you may need more room to store additional folding furniture as opposed to a relatively small space if you simply need to protect your grill tools from the elements.
